Why is it a good practice of the Person-Centered Model?

The main objective of the Inclusive Talents project is to awaken STEM vocations (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) among young people and raise awareness of the reality of people with disabilities through collaborative work teams to solve technological challenges. The person-centred model has permeated the project since the first edition: (1) Challenges are proposed by people with cerebral palsy based on what they need or want to do; (2) The working teams that solve the challenges are made up of young people, technology teachers from the high schools, researchers from CITIC and people with cerebral palsy; (3) The working system of these teams includes monthly meetings between the different parties. Visits are also made to get to know the context of the organisations where people with cerebral palsy are studying or living; (4) The solution to the challenge is tested and validated by people with disabilities and a celebration is organised at the end of each edition to show the results of the teams to the citizens.

Integrated Assessment (Person, Family, Housing) and Life History

At the beginning of each edition, interviews or focus groups are conducted in which people with disabilities explain what they need or want to do that can be improved through technology. Throughout the months of working together, the youths get to know details of people’s lives and visits to where they live and/or work.

Personalised Care and Support Plan for the Life Project

In the work teams, solutions are looked for concrete aspects of everyday life that can contribute to the life projects of people with cerebral palsy or older people.

Support groups

The Inclusive Talents project does not incorporate formal support group strategies as a structural part of its methodology. However, its collaborative and person-centred approach includes principles that align with some aspects of this type of support: active participation, the creation of a collaborative environment, a focus on individual needs, and fostering social and emotional connections within the teams. Moreover, in the Inclusive Talents teams, people work together to develop inclusive solutions, promoting the empowerment and active participation of all individuals.

Case Management and Resource Coordinator

The following are identified: (1) The establishment of strategic partnerships between CITIC-Universidade da Coruña and third-sector organizations in Galicia; (2) The combination and organization of knowledge and resources from the fields of technology and social services, applied to the teaching and learning processes of young people; (3) A continuous process of evaluation and adjustment, as the projects developed are based on the design, development, and ongoing refinement to remain consistent with the needs of the individuals.

Inspiring ideas for other enviorments. It can works! 😉

The methodology itself based on a person-centred approach, interdisciplinary collaboration, active learning, and technological innovation with social impact.
